2021 marked the end of the Brexit saga, with the transition period finally coming to an end on New Year’s Day. It also meant that an agreement was reached between the UK and the European Union that sealed the fate of their nationals. Many people moving from the UK to Germany after Brexit are still trying to get answers to some common questions related to the exit –

“What happens to the residency?”

“Who needs a work permit?”

“What happens to people already living in the UK and Germany?”

All these questions were answered by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building, and Community in the Withdrawal Agreement. The agreement provides answers to some of the key questions about residency, visas, and other important information related to moving from the UK to Germany after Brexit and the fate of EU citizens in the UK.

What Does Brexit Mean For UK Citizens?

British nationals moving from the UK to Germany after Brexit will require a German residence permit like any other country outside the EU. If you moved to Germany before 31 December 2020, then you are eligible for residence under the Brexit withdrawal agreement. To obtain it, UK nationals were supposed to register locally with the right registration office by 31 December 2020. They are also required to register with the Immigration Office by 30 June 2021. Similarly, any German citizen living in the UK will have to apply for ‘settled status’ by 30 June 2021. Many German authorities allow people to register online without the need for an application.

There is also a grace period until 31 March 2021 for UK nationals who entered Germany before the end of 2020. After the grace period, an application needs to be filed to get a German residence permit. UK nationals can also acquire a permanent residence status after completing the required five-year residence period on or after 1 January 2021.

Here’s how to become a German resident

Are you looking for help regarding other financial services linked to your move? Here are some useful articles to help you saving money:

In Case Of Dual Citizenship

If you have dual citizenship (Germany/UK) and are moving from the UK to Germany after Brexit, you still have unlimited residency rights in Germany. However, if you are a Union citizen, you can invoke this right by informing the registration authority and receive all the benefits enjoyed by an EU citizen. You will have to give evidence of your other citizenship by arranging an appointment with the registration authority.

Changes In Travel Policy

Brexit will, for now, not affect the German visa policy for British nationals. Under the European freedom of movement, they will not be required to have a Germany visa for a shorter stay (less than 90 days). However, from 2022, under the new European Travel Information and Authorization System, UK citizens will have to pay for a visa-waiver to visit Schengen-area countries.

How To Register With The Foreigners Authority?

You will need to present the following documents to be issued a new German residence permit

  • Valid passport
  • Biometric photograph
  • Evidence of your residency in the country (Tax statements, salary statements, etc.)

Since the new residence document will be made at the Bundesdruckerei printing office, it will not be handed over on the same day. The respective foreigners authority will keep you informed if they need any further evidence. You can check if you have the right of permanent residence by looking for the “Daueraufenthalt” (permanent residence) word at the back of your card.

The resident permit costs the same as a German identity card: EUR 37.00 for people over the age of 24 and EUR 22.80 for people below the age of 24. However, there is no fee applicable if you previously had a permanent residence card.

Moving Into A New House

If you are wondering what living in Germany will be like after Brexit, then you’d be pleased to know that nothing really changes.  Once you have received your rights of permanent residency, you need not apply for a new card when relocating to a new place. The registration authority will affix a sticker on top of your old address on your residency card. The process doesn’t require a separate appointment at the foreigners authority.
